Description: Athens is a pretty good town, probably the best in the state of Georgia, except on game days. Home of REM, the B52's, Widespread Panic -- those days are behind now, but the spirit of independent rock n roll is kicking here, as well as a punk scene that is alive and well and often on the circuit.
Athens offers excellent dining, music, and old university town culture, accomodations and the hospitality it is famous for - as long as you don't stay more than a week!
You can find local attractions during the week at the University of Georgia, dine by day or evening in a dozen patioed restaurants - often with a Southern twist - and see local talent or open mic at a variety of venues every night.

Local acts to catch:
* REM * Once in a while you'll catch them at a local show, but you can never know ahead of time.
* Krush Girls * If you like to dance, and dance hard to the best 80''s and 90's music in the universe mixed to perfection, catch these two dynamos. Not a better time.
* Hope for a Golden Summer / Tin Cup Prophet * Enchanting up-n-coming local show.

Dining:
* The Grit * The best local vegetarian and vegan soul food there is.
* Weaver Dee's * And the finest meat-eatin soul. You can't miss it, bright green and sittin down by the river bridge.
* The Farm * All locally grown, harvested, prepared, and brought to you in a lovely enclosed area downtown. Excellent live Jazz wednesday - saturday.
* mexican * Pronounced meh-hee-kaan, a thriving population of latino peoples makes for a number of excellent restarantes, including Agua Linda, La Parilla, and Calientitos.

Coffee:
* Hot Corner Coffee * While not the BEST coffee in town, this is unquestionably the place to GET coffee in Athens. Expansive indoor area allows for limitless coffee-drinking possibilities, and ample showspace. Also has a rare indoor/outdoor smoking area. Light 'em up, Jonny!
* Cafe Royale * Located on the main drag (Broad street) and facing the University, Royale is strangely secluded, a good place to pick up the local breeze and enjoy some of the town's best cafeing.
And finally, * Blue Sky * While officially now called Walker's Pub, Blue Sky was the classic Athens coffee and social hotspot for many years. Now a quiet spot where your not likely to run into anyone you know, but still serving the same excellent coffee. Try Four Goats!

Local beer: PBR bottles or cans.
High grav: Terrapin 420, from atlanta.

Watering Holes:
Sports:
*coming soon*
All Purpose:
* Room 13 * Great bar, pool tables, big screen, lots of space. Featuring the best back porch sitting area in the Atn's.
* The Manhattan * A great place to jump in, get to know some folks, and see local greats such as Coleman Barks, successor of Rumi. Try a blenheim and burboun.
* Flicker * This is the real local bar. Check the windows or Flagpole for local performances of music, drama, and spoken word, or just drop by for a tall drink and mingle among some good souls.

Venues:
* 40 Watt * Yes, THE Forty-Watt. The classic showcase for the top bands in Athens and from afar.
* Tasty World * The alternavenue, there are some great acts that come through here, or at least there used to be. Check it out. Salsa on Wednesday and Saturday nights!
* Georgia Theater * During the week the place to see a classic or Indie film (with two bars), the weekends host some of the Best in Musical Athens, and also quite a few cover bands. Strange.

Or, try one of the local Fraternity parties!!!

The University of Georgia:
Oldest established college on the east coast, 1798, UGA houses incredible educational resources, including a world class general library, and an outstanding science library. One can easily spend 2 - 5 days wandering her ivy halls or lounging on the North Campus during the summer. Again, however, don't stay too long or you'll end up enrolled or teaching at UGA. Okay, ONE year, at the most...

Seriously though, do not underestimate the unpleasantness of being a reasonable person on game day. I have nothing against the Dawgs, they're an excellent team, but the town is taken over on autumn weekends into a ziggaraut of tailgating.

'The problem with Athens is that every four years' it changes its mind." - L. Neighbors
To live in Athens is a different thing however. There seems to be a curse - possibly of Cherokee origin or Creek, but maybe Athena's influence in the end - which instills an inertia in the young adult who tarries too long here. And although it's not so bad to do a 4-year cycle in the town that wished it were a city, it is certainly no bed of roses. While living in the summer can be sweet if you're in a decent neighborhood, the town is full of the apathy to human services that are characteristic of this State, and getting things done if you are personally or automotively impaired can be nearly impossible. Sooner or later you realize that the Town is owned by the University, and if you are not involved with it in some way you are a minority and will be stuck in a sub-liveable income. To be fair though, for many who like this lifestyle, the town can be a great place to kick it, freestyle, in the deep deep South.

Hours are 8 am - 2:30 am 24/7 except game days and during church.
